Australia Public Holidays 2026: State-by-State Bridge Guide
Fact-checked May 11, 2026How we verify
Australia's 2026 Holiday Calendar
Australia recognises a core set of nationally observed public holidays, but the real number of days off you get depends on which state or territory you live in. Each state and territory gazettes its own holidays under its own Public Holidays Act, and the list of "extras" varies considerably. Because public holidays interact differently with weekends depending on the year, the bridging opportunities change every calendar cycle.
2026 is a mixed year. Easter delivers the best window of the year with a 3.3x return. Christmas lands on a Friday, mirroring Easter's efficiency. But ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday, creating a genuine divide between states that grant a substitute Monday and those that don't.
Here is the list of nationally observed public holidays for 2026, with each rated for bridge potential. State-specific dates and extras follow further down.
| Date | Holiday | Day of Week | Bridge Potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January | New Year's Day | Thursday | Medium |
| 26 January | Australia Day | Monday | High |
| 3 April | Good Friday | Friday | High |
| 4 April | Easter Saturday* | Saturday | -- |
| 6 April | Easter Monday | Monday | High |
| 25 April | ANZAC Day | Saturday | Varies by state |
| 8 June | King's Birthday** | Monday | High |
| 25 December | Christmas Day | Friday | High |
| 26 December | Boxing Day | Saturday (sub: Mon 28 Dec) | High |
*Easter Saturday is gazetted as a public holiday in NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT, NT and SA but not in WA or TAS (TAS instead observes Easter Tuesday).
**The King's Birthday (renamed from Queen's Birthday after the accession of King Charles III) is observed on the second Monday of June in NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, TAS and NT. Queensland observes it on the first Monday of October (Mon 5 Oct 2026), and Western Australia observes it on the last Monday of September (Mon 28 Sep 2026).
Two things stand out. Easter and Christmas are both exceptionally well-placed, each offering a 10-day break for just 3 days of leave. Australia Day on a Monday is a reliable long weekend with strong extension potential. And ANZAC Day on a Saturday is the year's biggest disappointment for workers in states without a substitute day.
The Best Bridge Windows of 2026
Here are the top 5 bridge opportunities for Australian workers in 2026, ranked by efficiency -- total days off divided by annual leave spent.
1. Easter Mega-Window (3 April -- 12 April)
Good Friday and Easter Monday give you a 4-day weekend for free (Friday 3 April through Monday 6 April). Easter Saturday (4 April) is also a public holiday in most states (NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT, NT and SA), although since it lands on a non-working day for most M-F workers the bridge math is the same regardless.
Take Tuesday 7 April through Thursday 9 April off. That's 3 annual leave days. Combined with the public holidays and two weekends, you get 10 consecutive days off (Friday 3 April through Sunday 12 April).
Result: 3 leave days for 10 days off. That's a 3.3x return.
Easter 2026 is the single best bridge window of the year for Australian workers. A 3.3x return is the highest efficiency you can achieve. If you only plan one extended break this year, make it Easter.
Book early -- school holidays overlap in most states, driving up demand and prices for flights to Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and domestic destinations like Far North Queensland.
2. Christmas to New Year (25 December -- 4 January)
Christmas Day falls on a Friday. Boxing Day is Saturday, so the substitute public holiday moves to Monday 28 December. That gives you a free 4-day weekend.
Take Tuesday 29 December through Thursday 31 December off. That's 3 leave days. New Year's Day 2027 is a Thursday, and if you take Friday 2 January as a 4th leave day, you bridge into the following weekend.
With 3 leave days: 10 days off (25 December -- 4 January). That's a 3.3x return.
With 4 leave days: 11 days off including the full second weekend. Still 2.75x.
Many Australian workplaces shut down between Christmas and New Year. Check whether your employer closes -- you might get those mid-week days without spending leave.
3. Australia Day (24 January -- 1 February)
Australia Day falls on Monday 26 January. That's an automatic 3-day long weekend (Saturday 24 January through Monday 26 January).
Take Tuesday 27 January through Friday 30 January off. That's 4 leave days. You bridge into the following weekend for a full 9 days off.
Result: 4 leave days for 9 days off. That's a 2.3x return.
January is peak summer in Australia. This window is ideal for domestic trips -- the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania, the Whitsundays. A 9-day break gives you enough time for a genuine holiday rather than a rushed long weekend.
4. King's Birthday (6 June -- 14 June)
The King's Birthday public holiday falls on Monday 8 June in NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, TAS and NT. That gives you a standard 3-day long weekend.
Take Tuesday 9 June through Friday 12 June off. That's 4 leave days, extending your break through to Sunday 14 June.
Result: 4 leave days for 9 days off. That's a 2.3x return.
QLD and WA observe the King's Birthday on different dates. Queensland observes it on Monday 5 October 2026 -- take Tue 6 Oct through Fri 9 Oct for 4 leave days and 9 days off. Western Australia observes it on Monday 28 September 2026 -- take Tue 29 Sep through Fri 2 Oct for the same 4-for-9 trade.
June is winter in Australia, making this a great window for trips north to warmer climates (Cairns, Darwin, Bali) or for hitting the ski season early in the Victorian Alps or Snowy Mountains.
5. ANZAC Day -- If Your State Gives a Substitute (25 April -- 3 May)
ANZAC Day falls on Saturday 25 April 2026. This is where things get complicated.
NSW, ACT and WA have declared Monday 27 April 2026 as an additional public holiday. In those jurisdictions, you get a long weekend automatically. Take Tuesday 28 April through Friday 1 May off for 4 leave days and 9 days off (Saturday 25 April through Sunday 3 May). That's a 2.3x return.
In Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory there is no Monday substitute. ANZAC Day effectively disappears into the weekend. You get no public holiday benefit. Taking 4 leave days (Monday 27 April through Thursday 30 April) still gives you 9 days off, but without any public holiday leverage.
State-by-State Bonus Holidays
Beyond the nationally observed holidays, each Australian state and territory gazettes its own additional days. These extras can significantly change your bridge planning depending on where you live. The list below covers headline state-specific holidays for 2026; check your jurisdiction's official calendar for any locally proclaimed regional show days or one-off events.
| State/Territory | Extra Holidays | Key Dates |
|---|---|---|
| ACT | 2 extra | Canberra Day (Mon 9 Mar), Reconciliation Day (Mon 1 Jun) |
| VIC | 1 extra (+ regional) | Melbourne Cup Day (Tue 3 Nov) -- metro Melbourne only; regional VIC observes a substitute show day |
| QLD | 1 extra (+ regional) | Royal Queensland Show / Ekka (Wed 12 Aug) -- Brisbane City Council area only; other regions have their own show days |
| SA | 2 extra | Adelaide Cup (Mon 9 Mar), Proclamation Day (substitute Mon 28 Dec for Sat 26 Dec) |
| TAS | 2+ extra | Eight Hours Day (Mon 9 Mar), Easter Tuesday (Tue 7 Apr), Recreation Day (Mon 2 Nov) -- northern TAS only |
| NT | 3 extra (+ regional) | May Day (Mon 4 May), Picnic Day (Mon 3 Aug); regional show days vary |
| WA | 1 extra | WA Day (Mon 1 Jun) |
| NSW | 1 extra | Bank Holiday (Mon 3 Aug) -- banking and financial sector only |
ACT and NT workers come out ahead with three extras (counting Reconciliation Day for ACT, and May Day plus Picnic Day plus a regional show day for NT). SA gets a notable advantage with the Proclamation Day substitute on Monday 28 December, which stacks with the Boxing Day substitute for an even longer Christmas break.
WA's unique scheduling of WA Day on Monday 1 June and the King's Birthday on Monday 28 September gives Western Australians two Monday public holidays that other states don't get. Each can be bridged to a 9-day break for 4 leave days.
The ANZAC Day Problem
ANZAC Day on a Saturday in 2026 creates genuine winners and losers among Australian workers. The issue is that there's no nationally consistent rule for weekend substitute days -- each state and territory decides its own policy.
States with a substitute Monday (27 April): NSW, ACT and WA have all gazetted Monday 27 April 2026 as an additional public holiday. NSW's Minns Government announced the extra Monday earlier in the cycle, and the ACT later aligned with NSW. Workers in those jurisdictions get an extra long weekend and can bridge from it.
States without a substitute: Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory observe ANZAC Day only on Saturday 25 April. There is no Monday in lieu. The public holiday lands on a non-working day for most M-F workers and effectively evaporates.
The practical impact: a NSW, ACT or WA worker who bridges from the ANZAC Day substitute gets 9 days off for 4 leave days with public holiday leverage. A Victorian worker taking the same block gets 9 days off for 4 leave days, but that's just a normal week of leave with weekends on either side.
Check your specific state or territory's gazette for the official 2026 ANZAC Day ruling. Policies can shift year to year, and your employer's enterprise agreement may provide a substitute day even if the state doesn't mandate one.
Unlike the UK, where substitute days follow a clear national rule, Australia leaves it to individual jurisdictions. This makes state-level awareness essential for leave planning.

Month-by-Month Breakdown
Q1: January to March
January starts strong. New Year's Day falls on a Thursday, so take Friday 2 January off for 1 leave day and get a 4-day weekend. Then Australia Day on Monday 26 January delivers one of the year's best Monday-bridge windows. Take 4 leave days (27--30 January) for 9 days off at 2.3x efficiency.
February is a public holiday desert nationally. No bridging opportunities. If you need a break, it'll cost full-price leave. That said, February is shoulder season for travel -- quieter and cheaper than January.
March is largely holiday-free nationally, but ACT workers get Canberra Day on Monday 9 March, SA workers get Adelaide Cup on the same date, and Tasmanian workers get Eight Hours Day (also known as Labour Day) on Mon 9 March. Each can be bridged to a 9-day break for 4 leave days.
Q2: April to June
This is the power quarter.
April delivers Easter (3--6 April), the year's best window. Three leave days for 10 days off. ANZAC Day on Saturday 25 April adds another opportunity for workers in NSW, ACT and WA, where Monday 27 April is also a public holiday.
If you're in NSW, ACT or WA, April becomes extraordinary: Easter plus ANZAC bridging could deliver 19 days off for just 7 leave days.
May has no nationally observed holidays, but NT workers get May Day on Monday 4 May.
June brings the King's Birthday on Monday 8 June for most states (NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, TAS, NT). Four leave days for 9 days off. WA observes WA Day on Monday 1 June, and ACT observes Reconciliation Day on the same date -- giving WA and ACT workers a separate Monday-bridge opportunity earlier in the month.
Q3: July to September
July is quiet nationally -- save leave for bigger windows or take a budget trip north.
August offers Picnic Day on Monday 3 August for NT workers, the NSW Bank Holiday on Mon 3 August (banking and financial sector only), and the Royal Queensland Show / Ekka holiday on Wed 12 August for the Brisbane City Council area, alongside other regional show holidays.
September is King's Birthday for WA workers (Monday 28 September), bridgeable to a 9-day break for 4 leave days.
Q4: October to December
October brings the Queensland King's Birthday on Monday 5 October -- a 4-for-9 bridge opportunity for QLD workers (and a Labour Day public holiday in ACT and NSW also falls on Mon 5 Oct).
November is nationally bare. VIC gets Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November (metro Melbourne only; regional VIC observes a substitute show day), and TAS gets Recreation Day on Monday 2 November (northern TAS only). These are modest but useful.
December closes the year with the second mega-window. Christmas Day on Friday 25 December and the Boxing Day substitute on Monday 28 December bookend a weekend. Three leave days (29--31 December) bridges into New Year's for 10 days off. SA workers get the additional Proclamation Day substitute on Monday 28 December (because Proclamation Day, 26 December, falls on Saturday in 2026), reinforcing the already-strong Christmas cluster.
How Far Can 20 Leave Days Go?
Australian full-time workers are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks (20 days) of paid annual leave under the National Employment Standards. This is in addition to public holidays -- unlike the UK, where bank holidays can be included in the statutory minimum. That means your 20 leave days are entirely discretionary.
Random Placement
20 leave days taken as isolated days or arbitrary weeks, not aligned with public holidays. You get the national public holidays as separate long weekends but don't amplify them.
Total days off: approximately 40 (20 leave days + 8 public holidays + adjacent weekends, but no extended consecutive breaks created through bridging).
Strategic Placement
| Window | Leave Used | Total Days Off | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year's bridge (2 Jan) | 1 | 4 | 4.0x |
| Australia Day bridge (27--30 Jan) | 4 | 9 | 2.3x |
| Easter bridge (7--9 Apr) | 3 | 10 | 3.3x |
| King's Birthday bridge (9--12 Jun) | 4 | 9 | 2.3x |
| Christmas bridge (29--31 Dec) | 3 | 10 | 3.3x |
| Remaining leave for personal use | 5 | 5 | 1.0x |
| Total | 20 | 47 | -- |
With strategic bridging, 20 annual leave days yield 47 total days off -- compared to roughly 40 with random placement. That's 7 extra days of continuous time off, and more importantly, five distinct extended breaks instead of scattered single days. Workers in states with additional public holidays (ACT, NT, SA) can push this even higher.
The 5 remaining leave days can be used for personal commitments, mid-year breaks in the holiday desert months, or combined with state-specific holidays for additional bridges.

Plan Your 2026 Bridges
The bridging principles are universal regardless of state: place your leave days adjacent to public holidays and weekends. Easter and Christmas each deliver a 3.3x return. Australia Day and the King's Birthday offer a reliable 2.3x. The biggest state-by-state variable is ANZAC Day -- NSW, ACT and WA workers get a Mon 27 April substitute, while VIC, QLD, SA, TAS and NT workers do not. Always check your state's gazette and your enterprise agreement for the official ruling.
