July 4th Weekend 2026 — Best Last-Minute Destinations

Share:

The Calendar Situation

July 4, 2026 falls on a Saturday. That means the federal government observes the holiday on Friday, July 3. You get a free three-day weekend — Friday through Sunday — without burning a single day of PTO.

If you are reading this close to the date, yes, prices are higher than they would have been in April. But last-minute deals still exist, especially on routes with high seat availability or hotels with unsold inventory. Under $400-500 per person all-in for a domestic two-night trip is still realistic if you are flexible about departure times and lodging type.

Here is where to go, broken down by where you are starting from.

From New York City

The Northeast in early July is nearly perfect — warm but not brutal, and the regional options are dense enough that you do not need to fly far.

Destination Flight Time Est. Cost (flight + 2 nights hotel) Vibe
Montauk, NY 0 min (drive 2.5 hrs) $350-500 per person Beach, surfing, low-key
Asheville, NC 1 hr 30 min $380-480 per person Mountains, craft beer, outdoor
Montreal, QC 1 hr 10 min $400-520 per person International, walkable, food scene
Virginia Beach, VA 1 hr 20 min $340-450 per person Boardwalk, family beach, accessible
Portland, ME 50 min (or 2 hr drive) $320-420 per person Seafood, sailing, relaxed

Best pick for last-minute: Virginia Beach has reliably available hotel inventory in early July and direct flights from JFK and EWR. It fills up less aggressively than the Hamptons and delivers a comparable beach experience at lower cost.

International option: Montreal is close enough to feel like a weekend hop and gives you a genuinely different cultural experience. The city is walkable, has excellent food, and Canada Day was July 1 so the festive energy carries into the weekend.

From Los Angeles

Southern California is the hardest place to justify leaving for a beach weekend, but if you want something different, there is plenty within reach.

Destination Flight Time Est. Cost (flight + 2 nights hotel) Vibe
Palm Springs, CA 0 min (drive 2 hrs) $280-380 per person Desert, pools, midcentury modern
San Francisco, CA 1 hr 10 min $350-460 per person City, food, Bay Area cool
Las Vegas, NV 1 hr (or 4 hr drive) $320-440 per person Nightlife, events, nonstop activity
Cabo San Lucas, MX 2 hr 10 min $420-560 per person Beach resort, snorkeling, all-inclusive
Sedona, AZ 1 hr 30 min (fly PHX, drive 2 hrs) $360-480 per person Red rock, hiking, spiritual retreat vibe

Best pick for last-minute: Las Vegas has massive hotel inventory and competes aggressively on price. Flight + hotel packages frequently undercut what you would pay booking them separately. Resorts run Independence Day events and the pool scene peaks this weekend.

International option: Cabo is the closest true international beach resort for LA travelers. Direct flights from LAX run under two and a half hours, and all-inclusive resorts reduce the variable cost headache of last-minute travel. Look for packages rather than booking flight and hotel separately.

From Chicago

Chicago summers are excellent, and so are the regional options. You can fly east, south, or west and land somewhere meaningfully different within two hours.

Destination Flight Time Est. Cost (flight + 2 nights hotel) Vibe
Nashville, TN 1 hr 20 min $360-460 per person Music, honky-tonks, nightlife
Door County, WI 0 min (drive 3 hrs) $280-380 per person Lakeside, quiet, cherries in season
Denver, CO 2 hrs $380-500 per person Gateway to Rockies, outdoor
New Orleans, LA 2 hrs $390-490 per person Food, music, history, heat
Cancun, MX 3 hrs $450-600 per person All-inclusive, Caribbean beach

Best pick for last-minute: Nashville has strong flight frequency from O'Hare and Midway and hotel inventory that moves more slowly than coastal beach markets. The city runs hard on July 4 weekend with outdoor concerts and events on the Cumberland River.

International option: Cancun is the Chicago traveler's quickest route to a Caribbean beach resort. Three hours nonstop, and the resort strip has enough capacity that last-minute hotel availability is better than most Caribbean islands.

From Dallas

Dallas has a central location that makes almost every direction work. The heat is significant in early July, so consider elevation or coastal options.

Destination Flight Time Est. Cost (flight + 2 nights hotel) Vibe
Destin, FL 1 hr 40 min $380-500 per person White sand, Gulf water, family beach
Santa Fe, NM 1 hr 45 min (fly ABQ, drive 1 hr) $340-440 per person Art, history, altitude, cooler temps
Mexico City, MX 2 hrs 30 min $400-520 per person World-class food, culture, museums
Denver, CO 2 hrs $360-470 per person Rocky Mountain gateway, outdoors
San Antonio, TX 0 min (drive 4 hrs) $260-340 per person River Walk, history, no flight needed

Best pick for last-minute: Destin delivers the best beach experience accessible from Dallas. The Emerald Coast has some of the clearest Gulf water in the US, and despite being popular, flight and hotel availability holds up better than Florida's Atlantic coast markets.

International option: Mexico City is underrated as a weekend destination from Dallas. It is genuinely international, the food scene is world-class, the altitude means summer heat is manageable, and it is significantly cheaper than Caribbean resort towns.

From Miami

Miami is already a destination. If you are leaving, you want either mountains, a city cultural hit, or deep Caribbean.

Destination Flight Time Est. Cost (flight + 2 nights hotel) Vibe
Asheville, NC 2 hrs $360-460 per person Mountain cool, arts, beer
New York City, NY 2 hrs 50 min $380-500 per person City energy, museums, neighborhoods
Havana, CU 50 min $400-550 per person (incl. visa) Historic, off-grid, one-of-a-kind
San Juan, PR 2 hrs 45 min $420-540 per person Caribbean beach, US territory, no passport needed
Bogota, CO 3 hrs $430-560 per person Culture, coffee, altitude

Best pick for last-minute: San Juan is the strongest option. No passport required for US citizens, flights from MIA are frequent, and Puerto Rico has a robust hotel infrastructure. July 4 is not a Puerto Rican holiday, so the island is running at normal summer pace rather than peak domestic demand.

National Parks: The Alternative Route

If beach and city options feel overdone, the national parks are worth considering. July 4 weekend is one of the busiest periods at parks like Zion, Acadia, and Rocky Mountain — but that means the parks are open and operational, not shut down.

The catch with last-minute park trips is lodging inside the parks fills up months ahead. Book lodges in gateway towns instead. Springdale for Zion, Bar Harbor for Acadia, Estes Park for Rocky Mountain. These are 20-30 minute drives to the park entrance and have reliably available inventory within 10 days of arrival.

Park Closest Hub Drive from Hub Airport Gateway Town
Zion National Park Las Vegas (LAS) 2 hrs 30 min Springdale, UT
Acadia National Park Boston (BOS) 5 hrs (or fly Bangor) Bar Harbor, ME
Rocky Mountain NP Denver (DEN) 1 hr 30 min Estes Park, CO
Great Smoky Mountains Knoxville (TYS) 1 hr Gatlinburg, TN

How to Actually Find Deals This Late

Search flight + hotel bundles on Google Flights, Expedia, and Hopper. Bundled pricing frequently undercuts separate booking, especially when hotels are trying to clear inventory. For domestic flights, check the 3-6 AM departure slots and Tuesday-Thursday-type availability windows even when traveling on a Friday -- sometimes Tuesday pricing algorithms carry over.

Set a price alert on Google Flights for your preferred route and check it twice a day. Prices can drop 20-30% within 48-72 hours of departure on routes with surplus capacity.

Credit card travel portals (Chase Sapphire, Amex Travel) sometimes surface better hotel rates than direct booking for last-minute stays. Worth checking both.

What Comes Next

The July 4 weekend in 2026 gives you a free three-day stretch with no PTO required. If you want the next big opportunity, that is Labor Day -- Monday, September 7, 2026. Labor Day is always a Monday by law, which means it automatically creates a three-day weekend. Take one PTO day on Tuesday, September 8, and you get five days off with only one day spent.

Use the Leavewise optimizer now to see exactly how to structure your remaining 2026 PTO for the biggest return -- Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the December holiday window, and any remaining bridge days that still have leverage.
