Presidents' Day 2026: The Perfect Ski Weekend (and How to Make It 5 Days)

Share:

The Mid-Winter Reset You Need

By February, the holiday glow has faded and spring feels far away. Presidents' Day -- always the third Monday in February -- is your built-in midwinter escape hatch.

In 2026, Presidents' Day falls on Monday, February 16. That's a guaranteed 3-day weekend for anyone whose employer observes it (most do -- it's a federal holiday).

Calendar showing the Presidents Day 2026 PTO window: 2 PTO days on February 12-13 combined with the weekend and holiday for 5 days off

Extending to 5 Days

Take Thursday and Friday off before the long weekend:

Date Day Status
Thu Feb 12 Thursday PTO day 1
Fri Feb 13 Friday PTO day 2
Sat Feb 14 Saturday Weekend (Valentine's Day)
Sun Feb 15 Sunday Weekend
Mon Feb 16 Monday Presidents' Day

2 PTO days → 5 days off. Efficiency: 2.5x.

Valentine's Day falls on Saturday this year -- which means you can combine a romantic getaway with the long weekend without using extra PTO.

Why This Is the Best Ski Weekend

Presidents' Day weekend is peak ski season, but there's a nuance:

The weekend itself (Sat–Mon) is packed. Lift lines are long, lodging is at premium pricing, and highways to mountain towns are bumper-to-bumper.

Thursday and Friday before it are not. By arriving Thursday, you get two full days of skiing with weekday crowds and weekday lift ticket prices (often 20–30% less). By the time the weekend warriors arrive Saturday, you've already logged your best runs.

The secret play: Ski Thursday–Saturday, rest Sunday, enjoy the empty mountain Monday morning when everyone else is driving home.

Best Ski Destinations for a 5-Day Trip

Destination cards for Presidents Day ski trips: Park City, Breckenridge, Jackson Hole, and Palm Springs

Western US:

  • Park City, Utah -- Consistent February snow. Two resorts (Park City + Deer Valley) in walking distance. SLC airport is 35 minutes from the slopes.
  • Breckenridge, Colorado -- February averages 10+ inches of snowfall. The town has enough restaurants and shops to fill your non-ski hours.
  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming -- For advanced skiers. February is peak powder season. Less crowded than Colorado resorts.

Eastern US:

  • Stowe, Vermont -- The best skiing on the East Coast. February is reliably cold with good coverage. Fly into Burlington (BTV), 40-minute drive.
  • Killington, Vermont -- Largest ski area in the East. More affordable than Stowe, more terrain variety.

Non-ski alternatives:

  • Palm Springs, CA -- 75°F in February. Desert hiking, mid-century architecture, natural hot springs. The anti-ski trip.
  • Puerto Rico -- No passport needed. 85°F, beach season. Flights from the East Coast run $200–$350 round trip in February.
  • Scottsdale, AZ -- Golf season peak, hiking weather perfection, spa culture. A completely different kind of reset.

Booking Strategy

Presidents' Day weekend is one of the most expensive ski weekends of the year. Here's how to beat the pricing:

Lodging: Book by early January. Slopeside hotels sell out 6–8 weeks before Presidents' Day. Airbnbs in nearby towns (not slopeside) are 40–50% cheaper.

Lift tickets: Buy in advance online. Most resorts offer 10–20% off for tickets purchased 7+ days ahead. Multi-day passes (4–5 day) have better per-day rates than singles.

Flights: Fly Thursday morning, return Tuesday (skip the Monday exodus). This window is significantly cheaper than the Fri→Sun pattern.

Rental cars: Mountain town rentals spike for Presidents' Day weekend. Reserve early or consider shuttle services from the airport.

For Non-Skiers

Not a ski person? February is still a great time for a 5-day trip:

  • Museum + food trip -- NYC, Chicago, or DC in February means no crowds at major museums and easy restaurant reservations. Bundle with a show or concert.
  • Southern road trip -- Savannah → Charleston → Asheville. Mild winter weather (50–60°F), beautiful architecture, fewer tourists.
  • Mexico City -- Dry season, 70°F, one of the world's great food cities. 5 days is ideal for neighborhoods, museums, day trips to Teotihuacán.

The Full-Year View

Presidents' Day is a great early-year trip because it uses minimal PTO (just 2 days) and breaks up the February monotony. After this, your next major window is Easter (April) or Memorial Day (May).
