2027 Public Holidays: Start Planning Your Leave Early

Share:

The Best Leave Planners Are Already Looking at 2027

The people who get the most out of their annual leave have one thing in common: they book early. Not a few weeks early. Six to twelve months early. They lock in the high-value bridge days before their colleagues, before flight prices spike, and before their manager's calendar fills up with competing requests.

The 2027 public holiday calendar is already fixed. Every date, every day of the week -- all confirmed. That means right now, in early 2026, you can map out exactly which weeks will give you the best return on your PTO next year.

The 2027 Headlines

Three dates shape the overall character of any year for leave planning:

  • Christmas Day 2027 falls on a Saturday. Bad news for bridge builders. You lose a public holiday to a day you already had off. Countries that observe Boxing Day (Sunday) will shift it to Monday, which helps slightly, but the December window is weaker than usual.
  • New Year's Day 2027 falls on a Friday. Excellent. An automatic 3-day weekend with zero PTO required, and it pairs naturally with the preceding Christmas period.
  • Easter Sunday is March 28. Good Friday on March 26 and Easter Monday on March 29 create a free 4-day weekend in countries that observe both.

The overall pattern: strong start to the year, weaker finish.

Country-by-Country Breakdown

United States

Holiday Date Day
New Year's Day Jan 1 Friday
MLK Day Jan 18 Monday
Presidents' Day Feb 15 Monday
Memorial Day May 31 Monday
Independence Day Jul 4 Sunday
Labor Day Sep 6 Monday
Columbus Day Oct 11 Monday
Veterans Day Nov 11 Thursday
Thanksgiving Nov 25 Thursday
Christmas Day Dec 25 Saturday

Top bridges:

  1. Veterans Day + Thanksgiving combo (November). Both fall on Thursdays two weeks apart. Take just the Fridays off (2 PTO days) for two 4-day weekends, or bridge the full stretch with 7 PTO days for 18 consecutive days at 2.6x.
  2. Memorial Day runway (May 31). Take Tuesday through Friday off (4 PTO days) for a 9-day break at 2.3x.

2027 verdict: The November Thursday pairing is strong, but Independence Day on Sunday and Christmas on Saturday are wasted. Slightly worse than 2026.

United Kingdom

Holiday Date Day
New Year's Day Jan 1 Friday
Good Friday Mar 26 Friday
Easter Monday Mar 29 Monday
Early May Bank Holiday May 3 Monday
Spring Bank Holiday May 31 Monday
Summer Bank Holiday Aug 30 Monday
Christmas Day Dec 25 Saturday (Mon Dec 27 observed)
Boxing Day Dec 26 Sunday (Tue Dec 28 observed)

Top bridges:

  1. Easter mega-break. The free 4-day weekend (Mar 26-29) extends to 11 days with 4 PTO days at 2.8x.
  2. Christmas observed double shift. Christmas and Boxing Day shift to Mon-Tue (Dec 27-28). Take Dec 29-31 off (3 PTO days) for 10 days through New Year's at 3.3x.

2027 verdict: The Monday-heavy calendar insulates the UK from bad years, but zero midweek holidays means no premium bridges. Slightly worse than 2026.

Australia

Holiday Date Day
New Year's Day Jan 1 Friday
Australia Day Jan 26 Tuesday
Good Friday Mar 26 Friday
Easter Saturday Mar 27 Saturday
Easter Monday Mar 29 Monday
Anzac Day Apr 25 Sunday (Mon Apr 26 observed)
Christmas Day Dec 25 Saturday (Mon Dec 27 observed)
Boxing Day Dec 26 Sunday (Tue Dec 28 observed)

Top bridges:

  1. Australia Day (January 26, Tuesday). Take Monday the 25th off -- 1 PTO day for a 4-day weekend at 4.0x. This is the standout opportunity of 2027 for Australian workers.
  2. Christmas observed window. Take Dec 29-31 off (3 PTO days) for 10 days through New Year's at 3.3x.

2027 verdict: Australia Day on Tuesday is the single highest-efficiency bridge on this list. But Anzac Day on Sunday and Christmas on Saturday hurt. Roughly even with 2026.

Canada

Holiday Date Day
New Year's Day Jan 1 Friday
Good Friday Mar 26 Friday
Victoria Day May 24 Monday
Canada Day Jul 1 Thursday
Labour Day Sep 6 Monday
Thanksgiving Oct 11 Monday
Remembrance Day Nov 11 Thursday
Christmas Day Dec 25 Saturday
Boxing Day Dec 26 Sunday

Top bridges:

  1. Canada Day (July 1, Thursday). Take Friday off for a 4-day weekend at 4.0x. Extend with 6 PTO days for 11 consecutive days.
  2. Remembrance Day (November 11, Thursday). Take Friday off for a 4-day weekend at 4.0x. Clean, efficient, single-day bridge.
  3. Easter weekend (March 26-29). Take Mar 30 to Apr 2 off (4 PTO days) for 11 days at 2.8x.

2027 verdict: Two Thursday holidays in peak seasons give Canada the best bridge opportunities of any country here. Better than 2026, where both Canada Day and Remembrance Day fell on Wednesdays.

Germany

Holiday Date Day
New Year's Day (Neujahr) Jan 1 Friday
Good Friday (Karfreitag) Mar 26 Friday
Easter Monday (Ostermontag) Mar 29 Monday
Labour Day (Tag der Arbeit) May 1 Saturday
Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt) May 6 Thursday
Whit Monday (Pfingstmontag) May 17 Monday
German Unity Day Oct 3 Sunday
Christmas Day Dec 25 Saturday
St. Stephen's Day Dec 26 Sunday

Top bridges:

  1. Ascension Day (May 6, Thursday). The classic Bruckentag. Take Friday off for a 4-day weekend at 4.0x, or take May 3-5 and May 7 off (4 PTO days) for a 9-day break.
  2. May mega-chain. Ascension (Thu May 6) to Whit Monday (May 17) -- take 6 PTO days for 12 consecutive days at 2.0x.

2027 verdict: Ascension Thursday is the reliable anchor, but Labour Day on Saturday, Unity Day on Sunday, and both Christmas days on weekends mean 4 holidays lost. Worse than 2026.

2027 Winners and Losers

Country Best Bridge Midweek Holidays Weekend-Wasted Verdict
Canada Canada Day (Thu) 2 2 Winner
Australia Australia Day (Tue) 1 3 Neutral
United States Veterans Day (Thu) 2 2 Neutral
United Kingdom None (all Mon/Fri) 0 2 Loser
Germany Ascension (Thu) 1 4 Loser

Canada is the clear winner of 2027. Two Thursday holidays in summer and autumn give Canadian workers premium bridge opportunities that other countries lack. Australia gets a single standout day with Australia Day on Tuesday but loses ground elsewhere.

Germany and the UK are the losers. Germany hemorrhages four holidays to weekends, and the UK has zero midweek holidays. Both countries should front-load their best leave into 2026, where the calendar is significantly more generous.

When to Book

Flight prices for popular holiday periods typically begin climbing 3 to 4 months before departure:

  • May 2027 bridges (Ascension, Memorial Day, Victoria Day): book by January 2027
  • Canada Day / Independence Day window: book by March 2027
  • November bridges (Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, Thanksgiving): book by July 2027
  • Christmas / New Year's 2027-28: book by August 2027

Workers who submit leave requests 6 months ahead also avoid the common problem of overlapping with colleagues who waited until the last minute.

Do Not Forget 2026

While you map out 2027, do not overlook the windows still available this year. 2026 is the stronger calendar year for most countries, and several high-value bridges are still ahead: the May holiday chains in Germany, summer long weekends across North America, and the exceptionally clean Christmas-to-New-Year's bridge in December 2026.

The smartest approach is to optimize both years together. Use the remaining 2026 windows for your highest-priority trips, and reserve your 2027 leave for the specific bridges identified above.
