🇺🇸 Memorial Day 2026: 9 days off, 4 PTO

Monday, May 25United States

Memorial Day 2026 lands on Monday, May 25 — the last Monday of May, as it always is. Most Americans treat it as a three-day weekend and stop there. If you take the four workdays right after it off, you get a nine-day break off four PTO days. That's a 2.25x return on your leave, and it comes out of the shoulder season before summer pricing peaks.

Why the calendar works out this way

The geometry of Memorial Day 2026 is as clean as it gets. The holiday is a Monday, so it auto-attaches to the weekend before. But the week after — Tuesday May 26 through Friday May 29 — is the last full work week of May, and it's followed by another weekend (May 30–31). That means four PTO days stitch the holiday weekend, your week of PTO, and the following weekend into a single continuous nine-day run from Saturday May 23 through Sunday May 31. No public holidays fall inside that window to complicate things, which is actually a feature here — no interruptions, no tricky substitutions, just a clean stretch of free time.

Why this is a smart week to burn PTO

Memorial Day anchors the unofficial start of summer in the US travel market, but summer prices don't fully kick in until around June 15. The last week of May sits in a narrow window where the weather is warm almost everywhere worth going, school is still in session in most US districts (so flights aren't yet at peak family-travel pricing), and European shoulder-season fares haven't climbed to their July–August highs. If you wait until July 4 to take a real week off, you're paying 20–40% more for the same destinations.

When to book

Flight searches for late-May US→Europe routes historically rise 18% between March 1 and April 15. The cheapest booking window for a Memorial Day trip is the first 3 weeks of March. For domestic beach destinations (Florida, the Carolinas, California), the curve is flatter — you can book into April without a meaningful penalty, but hotel inventory in Charleston, Savannah, and the 30A stretch thins by early May. If you're going international, lock flights first and worry about hotels second; hotel inventory is wide in late May almost everywhere.

Watch out for

  • Don't forget Memorial Day weekend itself is a peak travel weekend at the front end. If you're flying on Friday May 22 or Saturday May 23, book by late March — prices rise sharply inside 8 weeks.
  • Return-day flights on Sunday May 31 are cheaper than Monday June 1, because most travelers want the Monday at home before going back to work. Book the Sunday return.
  • If your company observes Memorial Day but you work in a shared-calendar team, request May 26–29 early. Other people on your team are running the same math.
  • Check that your state doesn't add a quirky local day inside the window — none do nationally in 2026, but a few counties observe local dates in late May. Leavewise's optimizer flags these automatically.

Where to go with 9 days

Lisbon + the AlgarvePortugal

Warm but not hot (high 70s°F), long daylight, beaches workable by late May, and prices 25–35% below July. Two days in Lisbon, then a 2.5-hour train to Lagos for the beach portion. Flights from the US East Coast are typically cheaper to Lisbon than to any other Western European capital in this window.

Budget: Flights: $600–$850 nonstop from JFK/BOS. Hotels: $120–$180/night in both cities. Full 9-day trip: $2,400–$3,500 per person.
Charleston + SavannahUS South

A drivable beach-plus-food trip that doesn't require a flight at all, which matters during a weekend that will have some of the year's most expensive domestic fares. Charleston in late May is warm but pre-summer-humidity. Spoleto Festival runs through May 31 and blankets the city with music.

Budget: Drive or $250–$400 flight. Hotels: $220–$300/night in historic district. Full 9-day trip: $2,000–$2,800 per person.
Costa Rica — Nicoya PeninsulaCentral America

End of dry season, start of 'green' season — daily rain is brief and evening-only, and prices drop 30% from the March high while the surf, yoga, and wellness scene is still in full swing. Nine days is enough to split between a beach town (Santa Teresa or Nosara) and a cloud-forest stop (Monteverde).

Budget: Flights: $450–$700 from most US hubs to Liberia (LIR). Hotels: $90–$200/night. Full 9-day trip: $1,800–$2,800 per person.
Kyoto + OsakaJapan

Cherry blossoms are long gone by late May, which is exactly why this is the shoulder-season sweet spot for Japan. Weather is warm, humidity hasn't peaked, and flights from the US West Coast are at their 2026 annual low before the summer spike. Nine days is ideal for a Kyoto base with day trips to Nara and Osaka.

Budget: Flights: $900–$1,400 from SFO/LAX. Hotels: $100–$220/night. Full 9-day trip: $2,800–$4,200 per person.

Common questions

Is Memorial Day 2026 a federal holiday?
Yes — Monday, May 25, 2026. It's observed by the federal government and every state, plus the vast majority of private employers. The US Postal Service, federal courts, and banks are closed.
What if I can only take 1 PTO day, not 4?
Take Friday May 22 or Tuesday May 26. Either gives you a 4-day weekend (Fri–Mon or Sat–Tue) for a 4x efficiency on one PTO day — the highest multiplier available around this holiday. May 22 is slightly more popular among US workers, so request it early if your team has shared calendars.
Should I extend the week before or the week after?
The week after (May 26–29). Extending forward gives you a full nine-day stretch because the break ends on a Sunday before a fresh work week. Extending backward gives you only seven days because the break starts on a Tuesday — Monday May 18 is still a workday unless you burn a fifth PTO day on it.
How much should I budget for a 9-day Memorial Day trip?
Budget domestic: $1,500–$2,500 per person. Mid-range international: $2,500–$3,500 per person. The single biggest cost lever is flight timing — booking by late March instead of early May typically saves $200–$400 per person on international fares.
Does this work for federal employees with different leave accruals?
Yes, and it's actually easier. Memorial Day is an established federal holiday, and taking May 26–29 as annual leave is a standard request. The optimizer handles federal sick/annual leave buckets separately.

Memorial Day is the first real test of the year for how well you plan your PTO. If you burn the week after it, you're still holding 11 PTO days for Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and the Christmas–New Year window — enough for a second major trip and two more long weekends. The optimizer tells you exactly how to sequence the rest.
