What it is
Independence Day, July 4, marks the 1776 adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress. The date is fixed in the federal calendar: when July 4 falls on a Saturday the federal observance moves to Friday July 3; when it falls on a Sunday, the federal observance moves to Monday July 5. State and private observance mostly follows the federal substitute.
The day's anchor tradition is the public fireworks display — every major and most minor American cities run a municipal show on the night of July 4, and the Macy's Fireworks over the East River and the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Charles River are both nationally televised. Daytime traditions include parades (often small-town and Norman-Rockwell-charming), barbecues, baseball games, and the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. The public reading of the Declaration of Independence is broadcast on NPR every July 4.
For PTO planners Independence Day's value depends heavily on where it falls in the week. When July 4 falls Tuesday through Thursday, the bridge configurations are exceptional: 1–2 PTO days produce 4–5 days off, and a full week off the surrounding workdays produces a 9-day stretch. When July 4 falls on a weekend, the value drops sharply — the federal substitute is a Monday or Friday, and the holiday weekend collapses into a standard three-day weekend.
Travel volume rivals Memorial Day and Labor Day. Beach destinations are at peak season: the Outer Banks, the Jersey Shore, Cape Cod, and San Diego are sold out months ahead. Mountain destinations (Aspen, Park City, Tahoe, Yellowstone-area towns) are also at their summer peak. Domestic flight prices are 30–60% above shoulder rates for the week of July 4. Major-city downtowns thin out as residents leave for the holiday — a counter-intuitive opportunity for low-key urban travel.
What's open, what's closed
Closed
- Federal offices, courts, the postal service, and the stock market
- Banks
- Most schools (already in summer break)
- Most government services
- Many corporate offices on the federal observance day
Open
- Almost all retailers, restaurants, malls, and grocery stores — full hours
- Public transit — reduced holiday schedules
- National parks, theme parks, beaches, and tourist sites — at peak crowds
- Movie theatres — major blockbuster release window
- Bars and restaurants — Fourth of July is one of the highest revenue nights of the year
Travel tips
Travel volume peaks based on the day-of-week placement: if July 4 lands midweek, expect heavy traffic on the Friday before and the Sunday after; if it lands on a weekend, the surge clusters into Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon. Beach destinations sell out 3–6 months ahead. National parks are at their summer peak — get reserved entry permits the moment they open (Glacier, Rocky Mountain, and the timed-entry parks). Major-city downtowns thin out, which makes urban hotels in NYC, DC, Boston, and Chicago an underrated value over the weekend. Avoid driving Friday afternoon if July 4 is a Monday — the I-95, I-405, I-5, and I-90 corridors all stack up for 6+ hours. Fireworks displays are universal: even small towns run a free public show, so check local listings and arrive 60–90 minutes early for parking.
